The Meiji government ordered the shipyard in Glasgow, U.K., to build the Meiji-Maru for lighthouse patrol services, the ship was completed in 1874.  

In 1978, the Meiji-Maru was designated a National Important Cultural Property as the only existing iron ship in Japan. 

 

To this day it remains a valuable heritage that conveys the shipbuilding technology of the iron ship era.  


Also the Meiji Maru is the first ship to be designated an Important Cultural Property.  

 

#MEIJI-MARU 

A museum ship in Koto district, Tokyo.  
It is displayed at the Etchujima Campus of the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.
