TUP: WORLD KAIKAN

Just recently, I visited Nakano City for a humble night out.

Nakano is just a few stops away from Shinjuku known with its independent cultural theatres but also with different kinds of old and new restaurants, and bars.

If you step into northeast side of the station, there expands endless alleys of izakayas and quite a few buildings that surived the unceasing modernisation of Tokyo development.

One most notable is “World Kaikan” situated four minutes’ walk from the restaurant district.

A building stands out with a honeycomb structure and with old hexagonal exterior walls.

Never yet set a foot in the building yet but there seems to exist more than 10 shops, including bars and snack bars which giving out “Tokyo-deep” atmosphere.

Later I found out the building is also known by ‘Nakano’s Kowloon Castle’ in reference to the appearance of the Kowloon Fort, a huge slum that once existed in Hong Kong.

Word on the street is that the building is already closing down.

“Redevelopment and demolition of the building following a change of ownership” is supposed to be taking place…

But nothing of that seems to be happening from the outside, and that must be another charm of this town, Nakano.
