Last month, I was in a middle of job searching and just before I found one, we took some time off to go on another vacation, this time to Kyushu. As you all know, Kyushu is the third-largest island of Japan’s five main islands and the most southerly of the four largest islands, that is except Okinawa islands.
In fact my father’s side comes from even more southern part within Kyushu which I wrote in my essay recently in relation to Takamori Saigo, the historical figure who founded the modern Japan.
Sauna and Art experience in Mifuneyama, Saga:
Now, for some time, I have been fascinated by sauna spas.
There are some famous spas in Tokyo and I’m a regular goer and it occurred to me there are many more in outside Tokyo. Among which to be known the best is situated in Saga prefecture in Kyshu.
The place is called “Rakan no Yu (らかんの湯)” located in Takeo Onsen, Saga prefecture. What I want to say about this sauna is that it was just a superb sauna experience.
A winner of Saunasuran Grand Prix for three consecutive years, and in October 2021 they set up a new sauna equipped with one of the world’s largest wood-burning stoves.
This wood-burning effect was something I won’t forget for a long time. The heat is not that of electrically warmed up sauna but more natural, comfortable to stay and relaxing with wood burning smell filling the room and actually seeing the fire dance around in the stove was almost sacred feeling. (I became all the sudden curious to Zoroastrianism…) It was almost like you are on a camp in woods uniting with nature around….
Sauna experience is something you have to dive into and words aren’t sufficient enough to explain. I know what a thing to say if I call myself a writer, right?
During our stay in this hotel there was a collaborating art exhibition by art house “teamLab”. Just check out the explanation by teamLab themselves.
The theme is , “Eternal Continuous Life”.
Gourmet experience of Saga:
Ramen culture is obviously what attracts people to Kyushu and Saga also is proud with their own style. The tonkotsu based is quite typical but more subtle and gentle with its punch. One I could eat everyday without being tired of, it was that kind of ramen.
Nature of Takeo Onsen:
Old shrine and woods.
And our destination next was Hakata, Fukuoka.
The most famous gourmet district of not only in Kyushu, but of Japan.
Stay tuned!
