It’s the end of August and if you are still looking for that particular book of this summer, why not check out those lists?

The Novels That Shaped Our World by BBC

It must have been around November 2019, when BBC came up with this special programme focusing on books to read.

Podcast version is also a must-listen.

This is not just a book list for educational or entertainmental purpose but to help us look inside us the readers and also to see the world we live in what shaped it as it is.  More of a list to ask our existential purposes.

For this purpose, they picked the 100 novels.  The introduction is as below.

“100 genre-busting novels written in the English language in the last 300 years.
Novels that shaped the lives of our panel. Here you can explore the 10 themes, each with 10 books, which reflect the ways books help shape and influence our thinking.”

Wide variety of novels selected by the panel are all of them intellectually stimulating.

I was so determined to read them all.

(Yes, I agree it is very British point of view list, but it covers such a wide range of books, old and new, though not a global list of books.
This is a list by BBC!)

Also, what caught my attention was how they classified the world with these categories to find out what shaped the world.

When you are to cover the world as a subject of studies, where do we start?

How do we dissect the world?

Here’s the list of categories.

1. Identity
2. Love, Sex & Romance
3. Adventure
4. Life, Death & Other Worlds
5. Politics, Power & Protest
6. Class & Society
7. Coming of Age
8. Family & Friendship
9. Crime & Conflict
10. Rule Breakers

This is very daring and hence such a bold list but very convincing one.

Our world in 10 categories.  BBC thinks those 10 categories shape the world.

And it makes sense to me too.

It’s been almost 3 years since I first found this list but I’m not even half way through the book list.

There is just so much left to understand about the shaping of the world.

Join me in a journey to find out what this world is about.
