Today, I’m posting another collection for #TokyoUlyssesProject (TUP).

SUKIYA-STYLE EEL RESTAURANT

“Unagi Kiyokawa” is an eel-house (restaurant specialised in eel cuisine) set in Koami-cho, Nihonbashi.

The small but elegant Japanese style establishment is in a narrow alley of south of Nihonbashi.

Built in 1927, before the war, the “Sukiya-style” restaurant was registered as a tangible cultural property in 2018.

Here is a little explanation on “Sukiya-style”.

Absence of formality, characterised by simplicity and harmony with nature is what defines “Sukiya-style”.

Such architectural style was born out of the spirit of the tea masters, whom disliked formal and luxurious design, but instead refined their inner lives to entertain guests in a simple and free space.

Most notable feature of this design is the harmony with nature. Bamboo and cedar bark are used for the ceiling and clay is often used for its walls.

Now beside the historical architecture, don’t forget to appreciate the irresistible taste of spitchcocked eels.
